The Erie City Water Authority was awarded a $6.5 million grant by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) today (July 21), according to Senator Dan Laughlin.
The Authority will replace approximately 1,300 existing service connections. Service connections to be replaced consist of wrought iron pipe which is attached to water mains by lead goosenecks to the short-curved section of pipe between the water main and the property line curb box. The work includes the associated excavation, backfill, and restoration necessary to replace the leaded gooseneck service connections.
“This will address serious public health and safety concerns since the projects involves the replacement of corroded, leaking pipes as well as connections that are made of lead,” Senator Laughlin said. “This will ensure these customers have access to a safe and reliable water supply.”
PENNVEST financing is provided through federal funding and prior bond issues by the state. It is not supported by the state’s General Fund budget, which covers the daily operations and services of the Commonwealth.
