An Open Letter to the People of Erie and All Who Care for the U.S. Brig Niagara

The U.S. Brig Niagara is more than a historic vessel. She is a living symbol of American perseverance, Pennsylvania craftsmanship, and Erie’s enduring role in our nation’s story.

As we move closer to the day when Niagara returns home, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank the many people who have helped preserve her, not just during this current refit, but over the course of the last several decades. This includes the dedicated members of the Flagship Niagara League and the volunteers of the Erie Maritime Museum, whose commitment and passion have played a vital role in Niagara’s preservation.

Because of the dedication, care, and foresight shown by those who have maintained Niagara year after year, we are operating in what can truly be described as a best-case scenario for repairs. Without that long-term commitment, the condition of this vessel today could have been far worse. That reality makes the progress we are seeing not only impressive, but truly outstanding news.

To everyone involved, from leadership and planners to historians, engineers, crew members, volunteers, and the skilled shipwrights and carpenters doing the hands-on work, thank you. Your efforts, from the top down, have ensured that Niagara remains strong enough to carry her history forward.

The capital repair and refit project is now approximately 69 percent complete, with carpentry, the largest and most complex portion of the work, more than 80 percent finished. These numbers represent thousands of hours of careful, skilled labor and a shared commitment to preserving something far greater than any one individual.

Because of that work, we remain on track for Niagara to depart Maine in the spring of 2026 and return home to Erie in time for July 2, 2026. That moment will be one of pride, celebration, and gratitude for our entire community.

Niagara has survived for more than two centuries because generations before us understood her importance and took responsibility for her care. The progress being made today proves that same sense of stewardship is alive and well.

We are close to welcoming her back home, and I look forward to the day when Niagara once again sails into Erie’s harbor, where she belongs.

Sincerely,

Senator Dan Laughlin
