Laughlin Announces $10 Million PENNVEST Investment for Erie Water Works Lead Line Replacement

HARRISBURG – State Senator Dan Laughlin (R-49) today announced that the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) has approved a $10 million investment for the Erie City Water Authority, also known as Erie Water Works, to support Phase 4 of the Customer-Side Galvanized Service Line Replacement Project.

The funding includes a $371,000 low-interest loan and $9.6 million in non-repayable funding, allowing Erie Water Works to continue replacing outdated galvanized and lead service lines throughout the city. The project will protect public health and improve water quality for thousands of Erie residents and will cover the replacement of service lines for approximately 1,000 households.

“This project represents another major step forward in our ongoing effort to modernize Erie’s water infrastructure,” said Sen. Laughlin. “Replacing these aging service lines not only safeguards the health of local families but also strengthens the reliability of our water system for generations to come.”

The PENNVEST investment will cover the replacement of customer-side galvanized service lines that may contain lead components, eliminating potential contamination risks. This phase builds on prior rounds of improvements already underway through the authority’s comprehensive lead line replacement initiative.

“Erie Water Works has been a strong partner in ensuring residents have access to clean, safe drinking water,” Laughlin added. “I’m proud to support projects like this that deliver real results for our community.”
