Sen. Dan Laughlin (R-49) today announced that the Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC) has been awarded 90 laptops through the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority’s Digital Connectivity Technology Program to expand digital access in Erie County.
The devices will support GECAC’s efforts to serve low-income residents and bridge the digital divide through education, job training and other vital services.
“Too many Pennsylvanians still lack access to the technology needed to succeed in today’s world,” Laughlin said. “This award helps ensure more people in Erie County have the tools they need to pursue opportunity, stay connected and access critical services.”
The Digital Connectivity Technology Program is part of the state’s investment of $279 million from the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Capital Projects Fund. This $20 million initiative provides between 20 and 200 laptops per award to eligible nonprofits, municipalities and community organizations. Instead of receiving direct funding, grantees are supplied with devices to distribute or use in support of their missions.
GECAC, a community support organization based in Erie, provides services including workforce development, education, senior assistance and emergency support programs.
The Digital Connectivity Technology Program is the final component of the state’s Capital Projects Fund initiative, aimed at strengthening broadband infrastructure and closing technology gaps across the commonwealth
